This workshop series invites participants to collectively create different dimensions
of an imaginary, alien world. It is a chance to reflect on the methodologies of
imagining and making as forms of research in a playful and dynamic atmosphere.
In response to a specific scenario, the workshop will follow and develop three
parallel but interconnected
strands: experiencing alien subjectivity, imagining alien
terrains, and exploring the social and ecological relations in this newly imagined
world. Over the course of the day the participants will exchange with guest experts
from various fields, informing and inspiring the development of experimental scenarios,
and shaping experiences, spaces, and structures as they go along. The
workshop concludes with a physical composition, an actual film set, which brings
together the outputs of the various strands: structures, performative objects, and
situations designed to transform the senses and shift perspectives.

Workshop Stream I – Imagining Alien Terrains
Lead: Joseph Popper & Kambiz Shafeei
Guest: Clemens Winkler (designer)
Room: Aesthetic Practice Lab ( D 2.05 / D 2.06 )
In this workshop, participants imagine and create alien landscapes out of simple
materials. Working roughly at table-top scale, we model and elaborate a series of
terrains before documenting them on camera. With the help of lighting and other
effects, we experiment, using our handmade landscapes to create cinematic
impressions of other, extra-ordinary worlds. In this hands-on, playful exploration of
atmospheres and aesthetics, transforming the familiar into something strange
can take on the shape of compelling and inventive imagery.

Workshop Stream II – Experiencing Alien Subjectivity
Lead: Tena Kelemen & Michaela Büsse
Guest: Patricia Reed ( author ), Claire Raymond ( FHNW )
Room: Aesthetic Practice Lab ( D 2.05 / D 2.06 )
In this hands-on workshop we practise how to grasp and be grasped by the alien
other. Through material experiments we explore organic form making and
take the different materialities and outcomes as a starting point for our theoretical
investigation: what can ferrofluids teach us about systems correlations? How
do non-Newtonian fluids and politics relate to one another? How do we interpret
the offspring of an accidental encounter between melted wax and iced water?
In this media-philosophy-in-action session we reflect on how the alien other affects
us through its materiality and how we impact on it with our bodies.

Workshop Stream III – Exploring Alien Relations
Lead: Felipe Castelblanco & Karolina Sobecka
Guest: Francisco Carballo ( Goldsmiths University London )
Room: Aesthetic Practice Lab ( D 2.05 / D 2.06 )
In this session, participants explore new models of governance, production, and
coexistence within this newly formed space. Through pseudo-social experiments,
films, and performative situations we imagine and enact new social behaviours,
politics, and space logics that take human and non-human beings to a new level
of interconnectedness. An introductory dialogue moderated by two international
guests will spark off discussions and creative responses around issues such
as land distribution, postcolonial ecologies, resources, and energy management.
